About Us

JIBOLU-TAIWO FAMILY OF EGBALAND, NIGERIA. USA CHAPTER

Historical Context

The Jibolu-Taiwo Family of USA has been in existence formally for close to ten years now. It was founded through the vision of Brother Kolawole Coker with strong support from Brother Obafemi Sonubi, Reverend Olaseni Coker, Dr. Doyin Coker-Kolo, Mrs. Toyin Coker Ugowe, Mrs. Somorin and other illustrious sons and daughters of Jibolu Taiwo family living in different parts of the United States and Canada.

For a young association we have achieved a great deal during our short period of existence. We have a constitution that provides a framework for our operations and we have successfully celebrated ten family re-unions (Ajoyos) every August in various cities where our members live. This is following the pattern in our homeland where the Ajoyo is held in August around the time of the harvest.

The first Ajoyo was held in New Jersey hosted by the Sonubis supported by a planning committee. The next two were in Maryland coordinated by cousins Mrs. Shade Odusanya, Ms. Tayo Coker and Dr. Deinde Coker. In 2012, we met in Delaware at the Osunkoyas. Dr. Hamiliton was the master of ceremony. In 2013, it was at Charlotte, North Carolina and was hosted by Cousin Babatunde Coker and family.

The 2014 was hosted by our Atlanta, Georgia cousins coordinated by Mr. Gbemi Coker, Mrs. Oguntuga and many others in Atlanta area. Mrs Agbaje and Deaconess Brown coordinated the 2015 Ajoyo in New York. In 2016, we transitioned to Tallahassee, Florida and our hosts were Cousin Gbenga Fayemi and family. In 2017, we were hosted by Cousin Sobey Salako and her family in Allentown, PA. In 2018 we were hosted by Dr. Mike Coker and family in New Jersey. 2019’s Ajoyo was celebrated in London, Canada with cousin Biola Fayemi and family.

This year’s Ajoyo (2020) will be held in Conyers, via Atlanta, Georgia. This will be coordinated by Dr. Bode Sowemimo, Mr. Gbemi Coker and all our cousins in Atlanta vicinity. We look forward to another memorable occasions like the others.

The hosting family has always had strong support from other members and the entire family union.

Through the leadership of cousin Obafemi Sonubi, we established a website (www.jibolu-taiwo.of-egbaland.com) that gives background information on who we are as a people, the socio-cultural values of our extended family and a listing of members of the Association. It has also provided an avenue for members to announce current professional and personal events and report on our accomplishments

This website is continuously updated. If you are reading this, our domain name was recently changed to “jibolutaiwofamily.org”. It reflected a web site that represents the Jibolu Taiwo Family worldwide even though the USA/Canada group pay for the upkeep of the web site annually. Through the assistance of Sister Tayo Coker, we have been registered as a 501 (c) organization.

Please submit or reach out to us with ideas on how make our listing better. We have more than forty pages of names. One or two times a year, we update the names list. We hope you will submit the names of those you know that are missing from our current family tree.

One accomplishment that we are very proud for is the yearly donation that we make to support the family celebration (Ajoyo) in Nigeria. We have done this consistently in the last nine years and in the nearest future, hope to extend this charitable giving to support specific projects that will benefit our extended family in Nigeria. In addition to the general support, sons and daughters of each of the three family quarters/compound in Abeokuta, namely Ogbe, Kemta and Itesi are routinely called upon to contribute to specific project that is taking place in the compound that is hosting the Ajoyo for that year. They have responded tremendously. This year, 2020, Itesi-Ake is the host in August. In commemoration of the Ajoyo, the statue of one of our great grandfathers, Chief Olufisibi Coker aka “Aderupoko” is been planned for installation at the Itesi-Ake Aderupoko compound. You are invited to contribute to the project.

Dr. Bode Sowemimo also established a scholarship for our younger cousins at home. Many of our members have contributed at will for the scholarship program. You are invited to do the same.

Since we reside in different parts of the country, meeting face to face every month is impossible. This challenge is mitigated through communication by e-mails, conducting a monthly teleconference and posting news on our web site. With glory to God attendance at the meeting continues to increase every year. We trust the Lord that this meeting will continue as it gives us the opportunity to tell our history to the younger generations, share our blessings and challenges, enables us to know each other more intimately.

Through this family association, our network of support has grown. We plan on living up to the great name that we inherited through our- exemplary living in our adopted country. Most importantly, we are committed to support one another, support our Motherland (Nigeria) and our great Jibolu Taiwo family. Even though our family members residing in US and Canada numbered more than 200 at any moment our active members is less than 30.

Please contact us through our “contact us” form online and we will guide you on how to become an active member and join our monthly teleconference. We need and will appreciate your bright ideas relating to professional networking, scholarship, sponsorship and general support. We need you too.
